Weekend relationship
End of the line love?

The same thing every other week: a farewell on the platform. Our columnist has had a long-distance relationship for three years and this time takes us on the train. Departure!

View out of the window that cannot be opened. Sitting on the train, again on the train in the wrong direction. To me, namely, and away from you. The closer I get to my home, the further away I am from yours. Berlin, Hamburg, Hamburg, Berlin. Every second weekend. With. The. Rail.

Sänk ju for träwelling – I haven’t made fun of that for a long time.

Not even about the clothes in which train attendants looked for a long time as if they had shrunk in them. The new dark blue uniforms are as tasteful as the food in the on-board bistro on my way there. On the way back everything is gray, I’m not hungry, there is only one beer at most. Or two.

It’s not a route, say friends. If it could get worse, it would go much worse. Could live in Frankfurt, Munich or Stuttgart. That would be nasty. Also because of the distance. And anyway: not seeing each other for a long time also has advantages. Say friends who only have time to themselves at home when they are sitting on the locus.

Bales of hay lie in the fields, look like queen stones turned on the edge. Played chess lately, not very well, but with passion. What’s our next move? You to me or me to you? I don’t mean the next trip on the ICE, my darling. My next step: move in together. At least in the same city. Are both no longer 20. We each have a marriage behind us and next to us two wonderful girls – of different ages and with the same name. Sounds funny, it is too.

We don’t lack fun, just perspective. Just…

Have both already thought out loud about breaking up, even though we love each other. Give this calendar saying with the end and the horror and the horror and the end. That’s right: our disputes, for example, weigh more heavily because of the distance. When swimming in the river of conflict, the kilometers are concrete in our shoes.

Shouldn’t just cling to us. Neither against each other while paddling nor against old ideals. Things don’t always go according to plan in life. Everyone who travels a lot knows that. I would rather rarely see the right partner than lie awake next to the wrong one every night. Real closeness doesn’t care about the distance.

Bjorn Krause is now a Bahn-Comfort customer, but can’t find those damn seats …
