Weevils: how to get rid of these insects? : Current Woman Le MAG

Weevils are insects measuring a few millimeters which can contaminate food stored in our cupboards, particularly cereals. To get rid of them, various natural solutions exist, but, in all cases, you will then have to put your food in airtight jars.

How to eliminate weevils with deep cleaning?

To effectively get rid of weevils, the first thing to do is to carry out meticulous cleaning which will notably eliminate eggs and larvae.

  • Start by taking out all the food and immediately throwing away any that are contaminated.
  • Use a small vacuum cleaner to clean your cupboards, remembering to get into the nooks and crannies.
  • Using a sponge soaked in hot soapy water (or water mixed with white vinegar or bleach), clean each part of the cupboard, bottom, shelves, etc.

Wait until the surfaces are completely dry before putting your food back on them.

How to fight against weevils using the cold?

Since weevils are sensitive to cold, you can definitely get rid of them by putting foodstuffs you suspect of being infected in freezer bags and placing them in the freezer for three days.

Let them thaw at room temperature and make sure there are no weevils left. The advantage of freezing is that it kills them, whatever their stage of development (eggs, larvae and adults).

What other natural solutions against weevils?

Many herbs and spices are excellent repellents. Among them are bay leaf, cloves and even black pepper (in grains). So just put some in your cupboards to repel weevils.

Likewise, essential oils (EO) will have both a cleansing and repellent effect. Choose EOs with strong scents such as fine lavender, peppermint or even eucalyptus. Concretely, place a few drops on cotton and place it in your cupboards.
