Wolfsburg extends incredible cup series with goal festival

SV Werder Bremen cannot stop the women of VfL Wolfsburg on the way to their tenth cup win in a row: In the round of 16, the record cup winners don’t give their Bundesliga rivals the slightest chance.

The VfL Wolfsburg footballers have further extended their impressive winning streak in the DFB Cup. The 5-0 (3-0) round of 16 win against Werder Bremen was the 47th win in a row in this competition across the seasons. The Wolfsburg women have won the DFB Cup nine times in a row since 2015. They last lost a cup game in November 2013 in their round of 16 against eventual cup winners 1. FFC Frankfurt.

Alexandra Popp (4th and 25th minutes), Ewa Pajor (35th), Vivien Endemann (63rd) and Jule Brand (84th) scored twice for VfL. 2738 spectators saw a one-sided northern duel. “The series itself doesn’t matter. We aim to win the games that come,” VfL coach Tommy Stroot announced before the game. “Nevertheless, this run is something very special; there will probably hardly be a cup series like this in the future. And of course we want to expand it.”

There was never a shadow of a doubt that evening that this would be successful: DFB captain Alexandra Popp had quickly put her team on the road to victory with a dream comeback after her injury break, so that “Werder would have the opportunity to eliminate us,” like Stroot did before had dutifully indicated was a long way off after a few minutes at the latest. However, the clear victory did not come as a surprise: the last time the two teams met in the Bundesliga, the eventual runners-up even won 8-0 against the outsiders.

Wolfsburg’s two main rivals, Bayern Munich (at Kickers Offenbach) and Eintracht Frankfurt (against SC Freiburg), will not play their round of 16 games until January. VfL Wolfsburg is a record cup winner with a total of ten titles.
