What are the most anticipated electric pickups in 2022?

Between Tesla, Rivian, GMC or Ford, the American giants have all announced electric pick-ups for the years to come. Here we take a tour of the most anticipated models, between extravagance and technical prowess.

Rivian R1T (Rivian 1 Truck)

Rivian R1T (Rivian 1 Truck)

Americans are fond of pick-ups, which have been among the most popular vehicles for many years, far ahead of SUVs and sedans. So far, of course, these were only thermal models. But that’s without counting on the imminent arrival of different electric models, each more interesting than the next.

You have probably already heard of Tesla’s Cybertruck, which is still pending, but we will see in this file that Elon Musk’s firm is not the only one wanting to enter this market. Rivian, Ford and even General Motors have all announced electric pick-ups with exceptional technical characteristics. Autonomy, performance, storage capacity or even ultra-fast charging, we take stock of each model in this file.

Rivian R1T

A Californian company by the name of Rivian has already caused a lot of ink to flow following the presentation of its revolutionary electric pickup, the R1T. If you don’t know the company, we made a detailed presentation that you can find below.

Since the presentation of the R1T, the first customers have been delivered: we now know a little more about this electric pick-up which will indeed have been the first to arrive on the market. With an EPA range of between 500 and 640 kilometers depending on the configurations chosen, the Rivian R1T seems to be cut out for adventurers. And that’s what the Californian company wanted to focus on.

With a fairly futuristic look at the front thanks to a very special light signature, the R1T inevitably makes a strong impression. And yet, it is without counting on the many small gadgets that the manufacturer has sprinkled here and there on the vehicle. Note, for example, the large tunnel located in front of the rear axle, which will accommodate all kinds of personal belongings, if you do not opt for the optional pack which installs… a portable kitchen, just that.

In terms of technical characteristics, we will retain from the Rivian R1T:

  • Autonomy between 500 and 640 kilometers (EPA cycle);
  • All-wheel drive, four motors (one for each wheel);
  • 0 to 100 km/h in 3 seconds;
  • 5 ton towing capacity;
  • Starting price of $67,500;
  • Maximum power of 210 kW in fast charge.

Tesla Cybertruck

In the fall of 2019, Tesla announced a vehicle straight out of a science fiction movie: the Cybertruck. With an unusual design, it is very likely that you have already seen this electric pickup from the firm of Elon Musk.

The salient angles of the pick-up and its silver color are not only there to make a strong impression. Indeed, the body is made of cold-rolled stainless steel, comparable to that used to build SpaceX rockets. Thus, this exoskeleton allows the Cybertruck to resist almost all external aggressions, and does not require painting over it.

As always with Tesla, the performance will be there, with a 0 to 100 km / h shot in less than 3 seconds for the most powerful version. A 2.8 cubic meter safe located at the back of the Cybertruck will allow you to load equipment that will be protected, and up to 6 people can take place on board.

Delayed several times and expected in 2022, the Cybertruck was finally pushed back to 2023.

The already known technical characteristics of the Cybertruck are as follows:

  • Autonomy between 400 and 850 kilometers (EPA cycle);
  • All-wheel drive, two or four motors depending on the version;
  • 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds for the most efficient version;
  • Towing capacity of 6.4 tons;
  • Starting price of $40,000;
  • Maximum power of more than 250 kW in fast charge.

Ford F-150 Lightning

The American giant Ford has dominated pick-up sales for many years in the United States and Canada, with its famous F-150. It is quite naturally this model that the brand decided to electrify first: thus was born the F-150 Lightning.

Taking up many visual characteristics of its thermal cousin, Ford has nevertheless been able to take advantage of the advantages offered by electric vehicles and thus offer breathtaking power and acceleration: 4.5 seconds to reach 100 km/h.

The big advantage of the F-150 Lightning over other announced electric pickups is its price: $40,000 for the entry level. This should make it possible to democratize this model more than that of Rivian for example, which will remain reserved for a more elitist clientele.

Among the interesting features of the F-150 Lightning, we note in particular the possibility of using the vehicle as a generator, using the energy stored in the battery (like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 or the Kia EV6 )

The technical sheet of the Ford F-150 Lightning can be summarized as follows:

  • Autonomy between 370 and 483 kilometers (EPA cycle);
  • All-wheel drive, two motors (one front, one rear);
  • 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds;
  • 4.5 ton towing capacity;
  • Starting price of $40,000;
  • Maximum power of 150 kW in fast charge.

Hummer EV

General Motors wants to keep the Hummer benchmark alive in the world of electric vehicles, and in October 2020 announced a Hummer EV with just over 1,000 horsepower, just that.

When it was announced, the famous crab mode made quite an impression: this allows all four wheels to swivel in the same direction, so that the vehicle moves laterally, or rather diagonally (you guessed it, like a crab).

In addition to this crab mode, we also note a very luxurious interior, with two screens at the level of the dashboard, a gigantic and motorized front trunk, up to 18 cameras and an 800 Volt battery architecture allowing exceptional performance in fast charging. .

The Hummer EV data sheet can be summarized as follows:

  • Range estimated at 450 kilometers (EPA cycle);
  • All-wheel drive, two or three motors depending on the version;
  • 0 to 100 km/h in 3 seconds for the Edition One version;
  • Starting price of $80,000;
  • Maximum power of 350 kW in fast charge.

Conclusion

You will have understood it at the end of this file, the electric pick-ups arrive to make a strong impression. Whether it’s the built-in kitchen of the Rivian R1T, the crab mode of the Hummer EV, the atypical design of the Cybertruck or even the reverse charging of the Ford F-150 Lightning, each manufacturer wants to impress it so that we are interested to his model.

However, it should be kept in mind that these vehicles are difficult to export outside of North America. Indeed, with lengths sometimes exceeding six meters and truck sizes, maneuvering such monsters in small European streets is a feat.

If the Tesla Cybertruck is currently still available for reservation in France, it serves as an exception. Neither Rivian, nor Ford, nor General Motors has announced the arrival on the Old Continent of their models for the moment. It may thus be impossible to come across them on our roads for a long time…

Electric supercar craze: the most powerful models

800, 900, 1000, 1500 or even more than 2000 horsepower, the rise of 100% electric cars has also allowed the arrival of new super sports cars from another world. For the most part inaccessible to ordinary mortals,…
