What does the all-electric Volvo EX30 have to do with Star Wars?

Volvo has unveiled a new car: the EX30, a small 100% electric SUV that promises great success. And imagine that the designers were inspired by Star Wars for the front of the vehicle.

Now well invested in the 100% electric mobility segment, Volvo unveiled a product a few days ago that should meet with great success: the EX30, the smallest SUV in its catalog and, above all, the most aggressive in terms of price list (from €37,500, excluding ecological bonus). Since the formalization, the manufacturer has flooded its YouTube channels with presentation videos. The Australian branch, for example, shared an anecdote about its design on June 9, 2023: the EX30 would be related to Star Wars.

At first glance, it is difficult to draw a parallel between Volvo’s car and the flagship science fiction saga. T. Jon Mayer, in charge of exterior design, explains everything to us: “ For the EX30, we were more specifically inspired by helmets seen in SF, in particular those of Star Wars and the Boba Fett helmet that the character uses in the films. It inspired the front end of the vehicle, with a marked graphic impression and a strong sense of pride. »

Volvo’s EX30 looks like Boba Fett, Volvo says

Does the Volvo EX30 really look like Boba Fett, the Star Wars anti-hero known for his personable armor? First of all, it’s not obvious. Then, we see where the brand is coming from: the simplistic block lines of the SUV make it a futuristic and refined car (the full grille helps). Boba Fett’s helmet is too, if we forget the many damage caused by time. The most observant will also notice that the T-shaped visor is found on the optical signature of the EX30, except that the letter is lying. Volvo compares it to the hammer of Thor, a famous Norse deity.

Besides Star Wars, Volvo has thought of other easter eggs for the design of the EX30. In its overview published on June 8, the Out of Spec Reviews channel reveals two more:

  • The frunk, the chest located at the front, features an engraving on the inside. It pays homage to Swedish nature (of which Volvo is very proud), with the EX30 driving through a landscape of trees and mountains. There is also a moose, which is the animal emblem of the Scandinavian country. “ The elk is to Sweden what the kangaroo is to Australia “, can we read on the Volvo website.

  • In the trunk located at the back, you can see instructions on the exact dimensions and what can be slipped there (pushchair, luggage, lamps, etc.). They look like Ikea instructions, a Swedish… sign.

In short, we can appreciate the care given to detail on this EX30 with its very attractive look. It’s a very important vehicle for Volvo, since the price could allow for volume.
