/ Mom / Child / Covid-19: what happens if school or fourteen is closed?

The coronavirus is still circulating in France and can cause school closings or quatorzes for children. What are the solutions for parents? We take stock.

Since the start of the school year on September 1, no less than 28 schools and 262 classes have had to close their doors. In question, positive cases of covid-19 within the school. The virus is still circulating and the fear of parents that their child will be infected is growing. This is not their only concern, however. Many wonder what the procedure will be in the event of the school closing down and / or in the event of a child in fourteen. Will they be able to take parental leave to take care of their children? We take stock.

Telework or work stoppage

If the child is positive for coronavirus, you can ask your employer to telecommute. If your job does not allow it, then the Regional Health Agency can provide you with a work stoppage, says France 3.

On the other hand, if your child is a "contact case" and is in his fortnight, the sick leave is not automatic if you do not have the possibility of teleworking. In this particular case, it is common law that applies, that is to say the "sick child" legislation. You have the right to ask your employer for up to 3 days of unpaid leave to care for your sick child under 16. Leave which extends to 5 days for a child under one year old or if the employee has three dependent children under 16. If you need more time, you will have to dip into your paid vacation and / or RTT.

Compensated parental leave in preparation

The government is currently considering compensated parental leave in the event of school closure. "We are going to reactivate something to support parents, either via daily allowances or via partial activity", indicated to the 'Echos' the Minister of Labor, Elisabeth Borne.

However, parents will have to meet certain conditions to have access to this exceptional device:

  • The closure of the school must be confirmed by the competent authorities
  • The child may not have any other reception device
  • Neither parent has, by virtue of their duties, access to teleworking

This parental leave will be a last resort. Jean Castex recalls that the objective is to find solutions so that parents can continue to work. "So more than parental leave solutions, it is rather childcare arrangements that we would make available to them, that we intend to promote in this hypothesis", said the Prime Minister.

Jean-Michel Blanquer notably plans a “Wednesday plan” to offer extracurricular activities to children that day… and therefore relieve parents who have to work.
