Tired of looking for the right words to respond to your contacts on Google Messages ? A new AI-replying feature could seriously cheat on you by auto-drafting for you.
While Google has started testing the addition of generative AI to Gmail and Docs in the United States, we learn that the firm has a similar project in mind, but this time for Google Messages. Digging through the code of the app’s latest beta, 9to5Google experts identified a new, familiar-looking button.
Google Messages soon also equipped with a generative AI?
As the specialized site reports, this button would be installed just to the left of the Emojis button, in the text bar, and would use the star iconography used by Google for its other AI features, but also for Bard, its chatbot competing with ChatGPT.
We learn that at this stage, this button is not yet functional. When you click on it, only a mention “(TODO!)” is displayed… which suggests that Google’s AI is not yet connected to it. Thereafter, and if this functionality is well adopted on Google Messages, 9to5Google believes that this command will make it possible to compose a message automatically based either directly on Google Bard, or on the LaMDA technology which animates it.

A feature you would keep control of
In any case, this feature would not aim to automatically respond to your contacts, but to write a message for you to save you time. This message would be added to the text bar to allow you to read it again and modify it if necessary before sending… which would remain manual.
Note that Google Messages already has a similar feature: Smart Reply. The latter already makes it possible to compose simple replies according to the context and tone of the last messages exchanged. It is nevertheless possible that this function will disappear soon to make way for a more sophisticated AI which would make it possible to write more complex messages.
