What is a four-handed birth?

On Baby Boom, Katia and Jeremy decided to have a four-handed birth. What is this practice and did the couple like this experience? They tell us.

Childbirth is an important step in the parenthood plan. This is indeed the moment when parents will meet their baby for the first time. A magical moment, which will remain engraved for life.

If during this event, the mother does all the work, the role of her partner remains very important. The other parent will indeed be responsible for supporting and caring for the mother-to-be, before and while she gives birth. While some prefer not to attend the birth, others want to be as involved as possible. It must be said that this is when they generally realize that they are going to be parents.

Physically participate in childbirth

Four-handed childbirth is an ideal practice for those who wish to participate physically in the birth of their child. Still not well known, however, she allows the partner to help bring the baby out of his mother's womb. Its role will be to catch the newborn baby below the arms (at the armpit level, as if to lift it) and place it on the mother's tummy, when it is almost completely out. A moment of pure happiness and complicity for the parents, both invested in the birth of this child. Of course, a four-handed delivery is only possible if the delivery is free of complications. Do not hesitate to talk about it with the midwives or your gynecologist during the birth plan.

In the third episode of season 8 of Baby Boom, we discovered Katia and Jeremy. Already parents of two children together, the couple decided to use four-handed delivery for the birth of their third cherub. A wonderful experience that they absolutely do not regret, as they tell us.

How did you hear about the four-handed birth?
Katia: “We heard about birth to four hands on the Kindergarten show, and then I did a lot of research out of curiosity.”

Why did you choose to try the experience?
Katia: "We had already tried the experiment with our 2nd child, so for the 3rd it was obvious."

Did this stress you out about the time of delivery?
Katia: “Before the birth we were stressed because we told the midwife about our plan but she had never heard of the four-handed birth. So we explained it to her and she agreed to accompany us in our project.

My husband was very stressed about how the delivery was going to go, when would be the right time to welcome our baby. I was calm, I had 100% confidence in my husband and I knew he was going to handle it. "

Did you enjoy this moment? What memory do you keep of it?
Katia: “We have a magical memory of it. It’s one of the nicest things my husband has ever given me. The fact that he is the first to welcome our baby and that he comes to present him to me and put him against me remains an unforgettable memory for me, etched forever. These moments are inexplicable, you have to live them to appreciate and understand them. ”

If we had to redo it ?
Katia: “If it had to be done again, we would be happy to do it again. But our little Jules will be the last of our little tribe. French maternity hospitals should talk more about birth with four hands so that dads can participate in the birth of their child and that they are the first to discover it and not the midwife. This project should be systematically offered to parents. ”
