What is known about the mysterious million hack

The top ten blockchain Solana is being attacked by hackers. The attack began last night, August 2, 2022, and continued throughout the morning. Almost 8,000 of the 21 million virtual wallets are said to be affected, according to Solana. Between five and eight million US dollars were stolen (as of 3:45 p.m., August 3, 2022).

The virtual wallets Slope and Phantom are the most affected. Cold-stored wallets and crypto exchanges were unharmed. Solana recommends every user to immediately transfer their tokens to one of these two alternatives. Those affected can register here by specifying their wallet. This will help solve the case.

However, it is not clear whether they will be compensated. According to Watcher.Guru, the Solana network was also briefly paralyzed by a dDos attack to slow down the hack.

There is currently only speculation about the cause. The whole hack is “very strange,” writes Julian Hosp, CEO of Cake DeFi. “Both the attackers and the nature of the hack are unknown.”

Solana CEO Anatoly Yakovenko believes a “supply chain attack” is possible, affecting virtual wallets on Apple and Android phones. In this type of hack, a hacker injects malicious software into an operating system and extracts information, such as the private key to the virtual wallet.

Emir Gün Siner, CEO of the top 20 blockchain Avalanche, thinks another theory is the most likely. According to this, the hackers could have exploited a bug in Solana’s software.

Solana’s team is working with security experts to solve the hack. BTC-ECHO has also asked several leading blockchain security firms for a ranking. So far, the inquiries have remained unanswered.

Solana has been struggling with difficulties for months. The network crashed several times this year. Critics see the reason for this in a design flaw. In addition, the company behind the blockchain has to go to court for a class action lawsuit. The accusation: illegal sale of securities.
