How much should the amount of a retirement pension ideally be to enable a single person to live properly? A study reveals the optimal amount.
A recent study has just revealed what a sufficient amount of retirement pension would be for a person living alone. As a reminder, the average amount of retirement pension in France is 1,531 euros per month in 2021, according to the results of the Drees (directorate of research, studies, evaluation and statistics) published in 2023. The amount increases to 1,420 euros after social security contributions. Unfortunately, many French people do not receive this amount and in particular forget to claim the social assistance for which they are eligible.
Recently, Agric-Arrco announced the increase in pensions by 4.9% from November 1, to compensate for inflation. But the increase in the cost of living is plunging more and more French people into precariousness. Many older people only receive 916 euros per month of retirement, an amount well below the poverty line set at 1,102 euros per month. The Institute of Economic and Social Research (IRES) carried out a study to define the sufficient amount of retirement pension.

Thus, according to the IRES, the amount sufficient to allow a person living alone to live decently is 1,634 euros per month. For the institute, living decently consists of providing for one’s needs and participating in social life. Expenses include food, transport and health. In fact, housing is excluded from the calculation of expenses because the study assumes that retirees own their home. Which, however, is not systematic.
One thing is certain, this amount is much lower than that estimated by the French. Indeed, according to the site Full Lifethe French believe that it would be necessary to touch 2,600 euros per month (before social security contributions) to live a decent retirement. We are therefore missing more than 1,000 euros per month to reach this amount.
