Buy it or do it yourself: Whoever wears the "scarf for life" helps the children of Syria!
"Many Syrian children now know nothing more than war. It is high time they got their childhood back." For this reason, Family Minister Franziska Giffey supported our "A scarf for life" campaign together with many celebrities in 2019. We were overwhelmed by the result and the commitment of the Brigitte readers. 380,000 euros came together, a new record. It is now a whopping 1.68 million euros! And the community of scarf wearers continues to grow, the scarves are almost impossible to miss in the streetscape.
The children still need our support. The situation in the host countries in the Middle East is getting tougher: Lebanon, where an estimated 1.5 million Syrians live, is economically and politically in a state of emergency, and the pressure on those who have fled is growing. The corona pandemic has largely restricted their chances of staying afloat with jobs, including in Turkey and Jordan. People feel more and more how undesirable they are but cannot improve their situation.

Where do the donations go?
Most of the donations from last year, 230,000 euros, went to the displaced families in camps and collective shelters in north-west Syria. They received school and hygiene materials. 8,250 children benefited from this and were able to attend mobile schools. After the outbreak of pandemic, 150,000 euros were used for comprehensive hygiene measures for refugee families in informal settlements in Lebanon. A total of 25,000 people benefited from this aid.
How are the refugees currently doing in the region?
The situation is devastating, especially for the children. Social workers report more frequent early marriages because families do not have enough money for all children. The lockdowns during the Corona period have also led to more domestic violence, and hunger is rampant in the camps of those displaced within Syria. Every year of the crisis reduces the children's prospects of schooling and vocational training – most of the refugee children have never known anything other than the state of emergency. Your everyday life is a constant struggle for survival. 2.1 million Syrian children do not go to school. And half of all Syrian children now know nothing more than war.
How does the price for the scarf come about?
The scarf is made of high-quality alpaca wool, cotton and merino from Italian production, that has its price – as is the handmade scarf. The wool manufacturer Lana Grossa supports the campaign by assuming all sales, packaging and shipping costs. From each scarf, a donation of 10 euros goes to the work of Save the Children. The organization uses it to help children who have fled within Syria or to neighboring countries. BRIGITTE fashion and creative editors designed the scarf in their favorite colors.
What happens on the day of action?
You decide! Of the December 10th is Human Rights Day. Wear the scarf for everything you do – on the way to work, when shopping, on the train. Just like our prominent supporters, take a photo of you with the scarf, share it with the hashtags #schalfuersleben or #hoffnunghaben on all social media channels.
