The competition from WhatsApp is getting stronger. With an update, the messenger service Telegram is introducing a whole range of new functions that the market leader has not yet had. Here we have summarized the details.
Telegram is still miles behind WhatsApp – at least when it comes to regular use. But when it comes to functions within the messenger, WhatsApp users are clearly left behind. Telegram was already clearly superior in terms of features. With the latest update, the developers bring 5 new functions for Telegram users.
While WhatsApp has been working on so-called reactions for some time, Telegram users get them with the latest update. Users no longer have to reply to messages, but can instead mark a message or a picture with an emoji as a reaction. Thats how it works:
New at Telegram: This is how the chat reactions work
Double tap on a message, highlight it with a thumb up. There are other reactions, such as a laughing smiley or a thumbs down, if you briefly tap the message on Telegram for Android. On the iPhone, you need to tap and hold the message. Each reaction appears with a unique animation. You can determine yourself which emojis should be saved as a reaction. On the iPhone, go to the Telegram settings, then to the point “Stickers and Emoji” and then select “Fast reaction”. If you have an Android smartphone, you will find the option to redesign the emojis in the Telegram settings under “Chat settings” and “Quick reaction”.
Reactions are always active in private chats. In the case of groups and channels, owners or admins must first activate them, but they can also specify which reactions are available in the chat. This enables many different ways to collect feedback.

Danger of spoilers: WhatsApp competitor protects film and series fans
Who does not know it: You are talking in a group and it is about a film or a series that you have not yet seen. Someone promptly reveals the end or important key events. What is not possible with WhatsApp is now possible with Telegram. You can mark your message as “spoof” before sending it. This then appears illegible in the chat. The message only becomes visible when you tap the spoiler text.
Telegram is much more than just a messenger. Here you not only chat with friends and acquaintances, but can also be part of public, international groups. The language should not be an obstacle, Telegram has now determined and brings a translation function with the latest update. You can now translate every message into your language directly in the app. To activate the function, you have to activate the translation in the settings under “Language”. The option to translate messages then appears in the context menu of a chat. Here, too, WhatsApp users are left behind. But on WhatsApp there are also no public and international groups in which another language could be spoken.
Telegram introduces animated emojis
Telegram was the first messaging app to introduce animated interactive emojis. While WhatsApp users can send a single animated emoji (the red heart), a lot more is possible with Telegram. With the new update, the developers have added new interactive versions for a whole range of emojis. Send one of them in a one-on-one chat, then tap the emoji.
You can now create a QR code for each user who has set up a public user name. The whole thing also works for groups, channels and bots. To do this, tap on the new QR code symbol next to a person’s username (or in the chat on the profile page), select colors and a pattern, and virtually print or publish your QR code. If you have a username, you can find your own QR code in the settings.
