  • WhatsApp now allows you to send pictures and videos in HD quality.
  • However, this must be activated manually.
  • With a trick, media can also be sent completely uncompressed.

Mark Zuckerberg has announced a new feature for WhatsApp. In the future you can also send photos in HD quality via Messenger. Then they are no longer compressed as much. For HD photos, the resolution is 2,604 x 4,624 pixels, while for standard quality (SD) it is 1,153 x 2,048 pixels. You can now also send high-resolution videos. Instead of 864 x 480 pixels, they are sent with 1,280 x 720 pixels when you press the button.

However, WhatsApp will continue to only send SD quality images and videos out of the box. If you want to share a recording in HD, you have to press the HD button in the photo editor before sending it. This is particularly useful if you share pictures that are to be printed out later, for example. Because that way you have a better quality for this. The function is also suitable for holiday memories that you want to capture in high resolution in the WhatsApp cloud. The same goes for video reminders, of course.

Images and videos can now also be sent in HD

However, there is no guarantee that the recipient will then receive the image or video in HD. Because the Messenger makes this dependent on the current Internet connection. If you receive an HD photo or video with a weak internet connection, the recording will first be loaded in standard quality. You then have the option to load the HD version later.

However, keep in mind that sending HD media without WiFi will put a greater strain on your data volume. With videos, for example, compared to the lower resolution, almost twice the amount of data quickly accumulates when you press the HD button.

If you want to send pictures and videos completely uncompressed via WhatsApp, you can do this with a trick. In the linked article we explain how to do this.

The HD button is not the only new button in WhatsApp. Currently, a wave, an arrow next to your name, and an “i” next to a message are also causing a stir. In the linked articles we tell you what it is all about.
