  • The “force stop” function on WhatsApp temporarily disables your notifications.
  • Thanks to the function, you can avoid awkward situations.
  • The feature is available on Android and iPhone (in a different form).

Imagine you lend your cell phone to a work colleague or fellow student who you don’t really confide in and at that very moment you receive a WhatsApp message that is only intended for you and not everyone should read. To avoid such problematic situations, there is a function for iPhone and Android to temporarily deactivate your notifications with one click. This function is also called “force stop”.

On Android, go to your phone’s settings and select the application options. There you will see a list of all installed apps, including Whatsapp. Click on Whatsapp there and you will see the “force stop” function, right next to the “uninstall” button. Activate the function and you will not receive any WhatsApp notifications until you open the app again.

There’s a similar feature on the iPhone, but it’s not called “force stop”. Go to the settings of your iPhone, look for your installed apps and select WhatsApp. Then disable the “Background Refresh” and you will no longer receive WhatsApp notifications. Unlike Android, you need to go through the same steps and re-enable background refresh to receive messages from WhatsApp.
