WhatsApp further strengthens its privacy protection tools. Meta Instant Messenger will soon allow you to display an “alternative” profile photo.
Don’t want everyone to see your WhatsApp profile picture? Good news, the instant messaging app has a solution for you. Or rather, will soon have a solution for you. Indeed, as spotted by the specialized site WABetaInfo, it will soon be possible to have a profile photo dedicated to your contacts and another for strangers who are looking for you on WhatsApp.
To protect your privacy a little
The feature, called “alternative profile” for the moment, allows you to hide your real photo (as well as your real name) from those who are looking for your number in the WhatsApp directory. Currently, within the privacy settings, it is possible to display a photo visible only to your contacts or to everyone. If you opt for the first option, anyone who tries to contact you without being in your contacts will see a profile without any photos. Not necessarily practical if you want to be identifiable by people outside your contact list (for professional needs, for example).
With an alternative profile, you will therefore be able to present a different face to your contacts and to people outside your close circle. A way to preserve a little privacy at little cost, while presenting yourself in your best light to potential clients or strangers who might try to contact you. Of course, it will always be possible to completely hide your photo for those who don’t even want to set up alternative profiles.
WhatsApp wants to expand its customer base
At the moment the feature is still in development and it is not available to the general public, either on the official app or even in the beta distribution channel. Only meager traces of its existence exist in the code of the latest version of the app. This new feature should arrive in a future update, but no firm deployment date is currently available.
Undoubtedly, WhatsApp is seeking, with this functionality, to make its network even more attractive for the famous “channels” for broadcasting information and for group discussions. To put it more simply, the application wants to hunt in the lands of more “pro” software such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
