IThere is a rock 20 kilometers from Aix-en-Provence, in the village of Peynier, where you can see the Ukrainian trident, the country’s coat of arms, accompanied by a verse by the writer Ivan Franko which states: ” It’s time for us to live for Ukraine. “Also engraved on this rock called La Garenne, towards which leads “an alley of the Ukrainians”, the flame of the Foreign Legion. It is indeed here that ended, in June 1940, the saga of 5,000 to 7,000 Ukrainians who had enlisted in the Legion to fight the Germans.
Who were these forgotten Ukrainians who fought for France? Where did they come from? The answers are provided by Frédéric Hnyda, secretary of the Avulde association, which brings together the descendants of the Ukrainian volunteers of the Legion…
