When bonuses and premiums favor foreign electric vehicles


DECRYPTION – The senators propose to reduce the amount of aid for the purchase of electric vehicles as long as French industry produces few of them.

Is it better to subsidize the purchase of electric vehicles, mostly manufactured outside France, or on the contrary to postpone these support measures when the tricolor automotive industry is there? Friday evening, the Senate approved an amendment to the Finance Bill for 2023 which would reduce by 500 million euros the amount of aid provided by the State intended to boost sales of vehicles with less CO2 emissions.

The bill provides that in 2023, 900 million euros will be allocated to the ecological bonus and 300 million to the conversion bonus. But for the LR rapporteur Christine Lavarde, “massively allocating subsidies to vehicles produced abroad and in particular in China at a time when we must at all costs relocate factories and develop a sovereign sector of production of electric vehicles is a mistake. An error that risks nipping the constitution of this sector of excellence in the bud“.
