Always prune lavender after flowering
Waiting until flowering, or even the harvest of the flowers, is over, allows you to enjoy the flowers while preparing the plant for next year’s flowering. It is then necessary to take the time to first remove the faded flowers before considering any pruning. To give the plants and plants time to heal, pruning in the morning on a hot, sunny day is ideal. However, the size will not be the same depending on whether the foot is young or older. The larger the plant, the more difficult it will be to cut. As soon as it forms a nice hedge if it is planted in beds, the hedge shears can be preferred.
The ideal height for pruning lavender according to its age
On so-called “adult” plants, over 2 years old, pruning is done on the tallest old clumps or the driest branches near the stump. For these plants, you have to remove the faded flowers and the tips about 10 centimeters. In old plants, removing branches that no longer produce leaves is necessary. Those that still have leaves should be cut off at the buds and scarred off. Finally, in the youngest feet, it is recommended to prune the lavender at mid-height. This will promote the arrival of new shoots on the foot and thus make it more bushy.
