When will you receive your paper income tax return by La Poste?

Many individuals continue to declare their income using the traditional paper form. Here is the date from which it will be sent for the 2023 income declaration.

It’s almost time to declare your income. The tax authorities have just revealed the official calendar for the 2024 campaign. From Thursday April 11, it will be possible to get rid of the traditional spring chore by declaring your income online on the impots.gouv.fr website or on the impots.gouv application.

For those who plan to make a paper declaration, the sending of forms began this Friday, according to Capital. Shipments will last until April 26.

By anticipating La Poste deadlines, this means that the paper declaration may arrive at the end of April in certain households. This must be returned in all cases before midnight on Monday May 21 – postmarked as proof – to avoid paying late penalties.

Nearly 4 million complete declarations in paper format

And it’s quite a paradox. If online declaration is in principle mandatory, many taxpayers will always receive a paper declaration. Indeed, if you are in a white zone, that is to say you do not have Internet access, or if you do not feel capable of completing an electronic declaration, it is then possible to send to the tax authorities a declaration of income by mail.

In 2021, 3.8 million tax households opted for the paper version. This is therefore 10% of households who were unable to complete the online declaration. As for the figures for 2023, the tax authorities have not yet released any statistics.

In theory, any taxpayer who is able to make his declaration electronically but who deliberately chooses the paper version is liable to a fine of 15 euros per document due.

But one of the disadvantages of the paper declaration is that you have to less time to declare. The deadline extends until June 6 for online declaration.

A sometimes automatic declaration

On the other hand, just like eligible telefilers, certain paper declarants can also benefit from automatic declaration, if the tax authorities expressly notify them of this.

This reporting method simply consists of verifying the accuracy and completeness of the information pre-indicated by the tax administration. If everything is good, the taxpayer does not have to do anything or send it to the tax authorities. On the other hand, in the event of a correction being made, the taxpayer must complete and sign the automatic declaration according to the usual procedures.

In total, more than 10 million households can benefit from automatic declaration.
