Having disappeared from the radar for more than a year in France, Oppo is making a comeback in the race for Android smartphones. To mark its return, the Chinese giant has formalized the launch of a new model available in two versions: the Oppo Reno 12 and 12 Pro.

Design and screen

To begin with, the Reno 12 and 12 Pro both have a fairly classic aesthetic with curved edges and a 6.7-inch Full HD+ AMOLED screen clocked at 120 Hz. These types of screens are quite similar to what we already find in smartphones of the same range like the Samsung Galaxy A55 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 13. To the eye, the screen projects bright colors with a certain fluidity, making it pleasant for navigation and even video content .

Performance

Equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, the Reno 12 and 12 Pro should provide more than sufficient performance for multitasking and gaming. On this side, it does a little worse than its Pixel 8a counterparts from Google or the Galaxy A55 from Samsung.

Memory and storage

In terms of storage space, the Reno 12 has 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the Reno 12 Pro keeps the same memory but offers up to 512GB of storage. Here, this is generally what phones in the same segment offer.

Camera

The camera has undoubtedly become the essential point on which each manufacturer strives to emphasize to best highlight this aspect of their new model. And Oppo is no exception to the rule.

The Reno 12 equipped with a 50 MP main camera and an optical stabilizer (OIS) which allows filming in 4K at 30 FPS. As for other sensors, it has:

  • An 8 Mpx, f/2.2, 112° ultra-wide-angle sensor;
  • A 32 Mpx, f/2.4, 89° selfie sensor
  • A 2 Mpx, f/2.4, 89° macro sensor (a little light for sharp and detailed rendering)

For his part, the Reno 12 Pro replaces the macro sensor with a telephoto lens offering optical zoom x2 and x20 digital zoom, with a resolution of 50 Mpx. This represents a significant improvement in zoom capability and image quality for remote shooting. On the other hand, the selfie sensor also goes up to 50 Mpx, compared to 32 for the other model.

Software and updates

Unsurprisingly, the new models from Oppo run on Android 14 with the ColorOS 14.1 interface, specific to the brand. Although the interface is greatly appreciated for its intuitiveness and readability, it is unfortunate that the manufacturer only guarantees three years of major updates and four years of security updates.

Connectivity and autonomy

Finally, on the connectivity side, both models support Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4. For charging, they have a 5000 mAh battery with 80 W fast charging, a charging speed comparable to phones in the same range. In terms of autonomy, the Reno shows good initial results, exceeding 14 consecutive hours of use.
