Where camping is the most expensive and why Albania is particularly worthwhile

Whether in a classic caravan or in the luxurious clamping version: Germans love camping. In 2023 alone, around 42.3 million overnight stays were recorded in this country. European campers have to shell out between 13 and 39 euros per night for two people in the high season.

This comes from an analysis by the camping portal “camping.info“, which evaluated the prices of more than 20,000 campsites in 34 countries.

Italy is the most expensive for campers

Italy, Croatia, Switzerland and Austria turned out to be particularly cost-intensive destinations. A night in Italy camper costs an average of 39.24 euros, in Croatia 38.77 euros. With an average price of 27.52 euros per night, Germany is in the upper midfield compared to other European countries.

In contrast, campers in countries like North Macedonia or Turkey can pitch their tent for less than 17 euros per night. It is particularly cheap in Albania. Price-conscious campers can vacation here for just 13.52 euros per day.

Camping experts advise booking early

The price differences within Germany are also interesting: While a night of camping in Hamburg costs an average of 40.74 euros, it is much cheaper in Thuringia at 23.23 euros.

According to Maximilian Möhrle, managing director of the travel and booking portal “camping.info”, interested parties should therefore try to make a reservation early in order to avoid high prices or fully booked places.

In order to save your vacation budget, it is also worth familiarizing yourself with the applicable local rules and laws. In Italy, for example, the “anti-bikini regulation” now applies. Violations can result in a fine of up to 500 euros.
