What is Resident Evil 4?

Resident Evil 4 is a game originally released on Nintendo Gamecube in 2005, then on PlayStation 2 a few months later. After three successful episodes, Capcom decides to reinvent the recipe that made the success of the franchise. Considered today as the best opus of the saga Resident Evil, this fourth episode takes up the horrific codes of the previous ones by incorporating a big action component, rather discreet until then in the games. RE4 is a fast-paced, tense action game that retains the elements of survival unique to the series, but injects frenetic action and constant tension.

The gameplay then adapts to the new twist chosen by Shinji Mikami, the director of the game. No more fixed cameras and scary corridors, the third person view invites itself to stick to the character and reinforce immersion. The doors that open slowly, in an unbearable suspense, give way to forced openings based on kicks. The zombies, on the other hand, no longer drag their feet, but rush in a single enraged mob on our poor Leon. Resident Evil 4 is a spectacular and demonstrative game, as much as it is generous. Generous in its bestiary and in its 100% adrenaline proposition.

Is Resident Evil 4 interesting at this price?

As with most game remakes, the question is legitimate. Why put a high price on a simple graphic overhaul, when the originals are available for very little. However, for less than 50 €, it would be a shame to sulk your pleasure on one of the best remakes, all genres combined and the best resident Evil nowadays. The graphic overhaul is welcome, with superb lighting and play of light and shadow, perfectly modeled and believable characters, and an incredibly sticky atmosphere.

The gameplay is no exception. Although it retains the dimension survival of the original and what that implies in the way of playing (managing your ammunition well, aiming correctly, moving intelligently) the game gains momentum at times. Leon can now move while moving, slightly larger areas involve more enemies, and some boss fights are much more tense. Finally, the story is unchanged, and you still play as Leon Scott Kennedy, an American special agent, sent on a mission to Spain to rescue Ashley, the daughter of the President of the United States. The old-fashioned charm of the original is still present, as is the B-series side over the top which makes all the interest of the license.
