Which sunglasses to choose for a baby? An expert enlightens us

From an early age, it is important to protect baby’s eyes from the sun. Nothing beats a pair of sunglasses for that. How to make the right choice ? Which glasses and which type of model to choose? Déborah, optician at Optical Center answers us.

With the approach of sunny days and summer, the sun is becoming more and more present. For many it’s great, but for toddlers it’s a little less so. Because the children’s eyes and more particularly of babies are very sensitive to UV rays from the sun, much more than adults. As a parent, it is therefore important to remain vigilant and protect your children’s eyes as much as possible. For it, the sunglasses are essential. They should not be neglected.

Toddlers can wear them from an early age, from 6 months, especially if you are used to doing outdoor activities or if you live in a very sunny area. But beware, a pair of sunglasses cannot be chosen just anywhere and especially not in two minutes flat. The best advice for parents is to go to the store with their baby so that they can try on the glasses and find the model that suits them. How to make the right choice ? What should you pay attention to before buying a pair? Which lenses to choose? To see more clearly, Déborah, optician at Optical Center answers us.

Choose a suitable frame

For a baby to be able to wear his sunglasses, you have to choose a model suitable for his young age and who is also comfortable. “Unlike a pair for adults, choose a frame with flexible temples and which are straight at the back at the level of the sleeve, and not folded over. The frame will thus hold on the child’s temples”explains the optician.

“We also advise on sunglasses for babies to add a small elastic cord, but not too tight, which connects the two branches so that the child cannot remove them. And a bit like sports frames, the frame must also be curved on the front to protect the eyes and fit the shape of the child’s face.”

In general, sunglasses from the French brand Julbo are very good for babies, Déborah assures us: “They have several colors and several sizes.” The Parisian brand Izipizi also offers very good models for children.

What type of glass and what protection to take?

To further protect baby’s eyes, it is important to choose from your optician organic glassesand not minerals, endowed with100% UV, UVA and UVB protection index. “Organic lenses are lighter, they don’t break, but they scratch easily, that’s the negative point”, explains Déborah, optician.

The glasses must display at minimum a protection factor of 3.

Do baby sunglasses change every year?

Unlike eyeglasses, which are changed regularly every year, baby sunglasses can be kept a little longer, if the lenses are not scratched and if the child does not need any particular correction.

“Above all, it will depend on the morphology of the child’s head. That’s why you have to come to the store with your child to try them on. It is also necessary to check that the glasses are not too scratched, if this is the case it can be embarrassing for the child and we know that a toddler will not tell you ‘it’s scratched, I can’t see ‘”, concludes the optician.
