A SIM 3.0 card in place – After having hosted McDonald’s NFTs in Chinablockchain Conflux wants to conquer the millions of smartphones in the country. She collaborates with China Telecom to propose a SIM card able to interact with a blockchain.
In series of tweets on February 15, Conflux Network announced and provided details of its partnership with China Telecom. As a reminder, it is the second mobile phone operator in China. The company reportedly has over 390 million mobile subscribers.
Conflux is a Tier 1 blockchain using a hybrid consensus mechanism. This combines proof-of-work and proof-of-stake. The platform is now considered “the only regulatory-compliant public blockchain in China”. Its parent company, the Shanghai Tree-Graph Blockchain Research Institutehas the support of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.
This collaboration between Conflux and China Telecom aims to develop Blockchain-enabled SIM cards. The research and development phase is over. Now the card is connected to the main Conflux network and it is being tested. The first pilot program is expected to launch in Hong Kong this year.

For Conflux, this project will “reducing barriers to entry for Web3 and the metaverse”. According to him, the prototype of the SIM card has functions which make it possible to store and send digital assets.
The SIM card may in particular manage and store users’ public and private private keys. They can use it to execute a digital signature “so that the private key does not come out of the card”.
For information, Conflux and China Telecom are not the first companies that want to offer a SIM card capable of exploiting the different opportunities that web3 offers. In 2021, Orange and Smarty had already unveiled their SIM card allowing interaction with the various connected objects of a smart city. The map uses the blockchain and the NFT to ensure the fluidity, safety and responsiveness of communications with the various sensors.
The mobile telephony giants apparently do not want to miss the turn of Web3. Both China Telecom and Orange have started working on a SIM card that can communicate with a blockchain. Nokia, meanwhile, has entered the race for use cases of metaverses in industry.
