If the vehicle was registered before January 1, 2017, the first check will be carried out no later than December 31, 2024. To stagger the checks, vehicles whose anniversary date of entry into circulation falls before April 15 must carry it out by August 14, 2024.
Brakes, handlebars, lights, leaks, tires: the check covers 78 points, a little less than for cars. The implementation of this compulsory control is contested by many bikers who gathered on Saturday and Sunday throughout France at the call of the French Federation of Angry Bikers. There were 38,450 demonstrators in total during the weekend, including 7,000 in Paris on Saturday, according to the Minister of the Interior. The organizers counted 10,000 in the capital.
A check which should exceed 50 euros
The price of the check is set freely by the centers for each category of vehicle, but it should exceed fifty euros and could go up to a hundred euros. Nearly 2.5 million people are expected to carry out their first regulatory technical inspection from 2024, according to the organization representing professionals in the sector, Mobilians.
87 reasons for major failures require a second inspection, requiring a return within the following two months with the repaired vehicle. Among these major problems: a worn brake disc, a non-regulatory exhaust pipe, a lack of a stand or a loose license plate. In the event of a critical failure (excessively worn tire or brake disc, in particular), the vehicle will no longer be authorized to circulate from midnight on the day of the inspection.
The inspection is valid for three years. In the event of resale of the vehicle, a technical inspection report less than six months old must also be provided. If major defects are noted, the sale must be made within two months.
Not all automobile inspection centers accept motorcycles: the inspectors must be trained and the center must be approved to carry them out. Certain vehicles remain exempt from technical inspection: collector’s motorcycles (before 1960) or used in sporting competitions such as enduro or trial, as well as quads approved as agricultural machinery. Electric bicycles and scooters are not affected either: they are not part of category L if they are limited to 25 km/h.
