why BoursoBank restricts check remittances

Since the start of 2023, BoursoBank has limited the amount of check remittances from its customers. Information which now appears clearly in its price brochure.

Check delivery (limit 250 over 30 rolling days) The mention appears for the first time in BoursoBank’s new price brochure, applicable since November 22. However, this limitation is older. In an exchange also dated at the end of November, the communication from the online bank confirmed to us that it was in force since January 2023.

From the same source, this limit of 250 euros only applies to new customers. Older users suffer different limitations, the bank’s communication explained to us, without further details.

Objective of the measure: to face the resurgence of fraud on check remittances. A reality also pointed out by the Banque de France, which has warned on the subject several times.

A legal measure?

Last June, the consumer association UFC-Que Choisir gave BoursoBank formal notice to mention this limit in its price brochure. A minimum to know what basic banking services a customer has access to before opening an account, explains the association on its website.

UFC-Que Choisir also questions the legality of this limit. Article L. 131-31 clearly states: The check is payable on sight. Any mention to the contrary is deemed unwritten. The check presented for payment before the day indicated as the date of issue is payable on the day of its presentation, recalls the association, which continues: This principle, as recalled by Mlanie Saldanha, lawyer at UFC-Que Choisir, hardly seems open the door to possible exceptions. However, this is not what Boursorama is doing by claiming that the word mention used in this article refers to any inscription which would be made on the title itself and which would have the effect of affecting its payment!

In fact, BoursoBank is, to our knowledge, the only bank to apply such drastic limits on check remittances.
