Imagine you buy a brand new Canon brand cartridge for your Canon printer and this cartridge is found to be “fake”. This is exactly what happens to many users.
The printer industry is amazing. As the products are rather boring from a technological point of view, so many manufacturers of printers can surprise us. Last year, we told you about the story of Canon multifunction printers who refuse to scan when their ink tanks are empty. A hateful practice that resulted in a class action lawsuit in the United States.
Printer manufacturers are known to manage to charge their customers … They use DRM to secure the conditions of access and sale of ink cartridges. However, these DRMs have turned against them. Indeed, some Canon toner cartridges are now detected as counterfeit. Canon is forced to give tips to bypass its own DRM.
Semiconductor shortages hit printers too
According to Canon, information can be found on the support pages, this problem is linked to shortages in the semiconductor industry. Canon has no trouble getting other parts, it seems to have a lot of plastic and everything it needs to produce these cartridges. The Japanese manufacturer is unable to source the chips used to distinguish cartridges produced by Canon from those made by other companies. It was therefore decided to supply these consumables without the semiconductor components until normal supply resumes.
Canon also explains that these cartridges have some missing features like the ability to warn people when cartridge levels are low, but that seems like a minor inconvenience compared to the prospect of running out of cartridges due to a shortage. of chips.
