Can the Pixel Fold overshadow the Galaxy Z Fold range? It could in any case be more affordable than its competitors from Samsung.
Despite the gradual arrival of increasingly interesting proposals from other manufacturers (Motorola, OPPO, Xiaomi) on the folding screen smartphone market, Samsung remains the undisputed leader in the industry. A hegemony that Google will try to challenge with its Pixel Fold.
The Pixel Fold cheaper than the Galaxy Z Fold 4?
To compete with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and its upcoming successor, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, the Mountain View firm would have an ace up its sleeve: a more affordable price of several hundred euros.
Leaker Yogesh Brar, who has a nice resume of leaks under his belt, claims the infamous Pixel Fold will retail for between $1,300 and $1,500. If we take the low range, we see a huge price difference with the Galaxy Z Fold 4, sold for $ 1,799 when it was released. And even if we approach the high range, it is still $300 that separates the two devices.
However, let’s take this information with a grain of salt. Indeed, it may seem suspicious that Google manages to pull the price of the folding smartphone down in this way when it is its first model, and that the American group cannot achieve economies of scale in the same proportions as Samsung can.
Announcement in May 2023
To reduce costs, the Pixel Fold could be powered by a Tensor G2 chip, which already equips the Pixel 7, rather than a Tensor G3 SoC which will be found in the Pixel 8 series. It is also possible that the smartphone makes concessions in terms of design, screen or photography compared to the premium features of Samsung’s folding.
The report confirms that the Pixel Fold should be presented at the next Google I/O, scheduled for May 10, 2023, but its availability date is unknown. The source mentions a launch in a limited number and it is not certain that Europe will be served for this first version if we rely on the history of the Pixels.
The mid-range Pixel 7a will also be announced on May 10, for an early Q3 release and priced between $450 and $500.
