why is Ionity stopping its advantageous subscription for fast charging?

The electric car charging consortium announces the end of the Ionity Passport subscription, which allowed users of fast chargers to make some savings. Let’s take a look at what’s next.

Ionity is now very well established in Europe, with more than 435 stations open, totaling nearly 2,000 fast charging stations. A subscription existed until the beginning of December 2022, but it has just disappeared. What does Ionity have in store for us in 2023?

A subscription that disappears, another that arrives… soon

The big rollers appreciated the Ionity Passport offer for the savings it made possible. In fact, by paying 17.99 euros per month (one-year commitment), Ionity customers could benefit from a preferential recharge rate.

The price for non-customers of the offer, in France, is 0.69 euro per kWh today, compared to 0.35 euro with the passport offer. In practice, as soon as you load more than 635 kWh per year at Ionity, the passport offer is financially validwhich necessarily attracts big riders.

But at the dawn of 2023, Ionity has just withdrawn its subscription offerspecifying that a new offer is emerging.

We aim to continually improve our offering, which is why we plan to make some adjustments at the end of 2022. As of December 6, 2022, we are no longer offering our Ionity Passport subscription model to new customers.

In order to provide more flexibility in the future, we are working on a new offer which should be introduced in the first half of 2023. Current contracts will be terminated at the end of the contract period, we will inform each customer individually.

Excerpt from the Ionity press release

In addition to this press release, Ionity states that“As customer needs and market constraints have changed, we are working on a new subscription model that offers more flexibility to our customers”. What to imagine monthly subscriptions and no longer annual?

Concretely, we have no details on the form that the replacement offer of Ionity Passport should take. The first half of 2023 should answer this question, and current customers continue to benefit from their preferential rate until the end of their annual contract.

For those who recently renewed Ionity Passport, this was perhaps the good operation of the year. In effect, if the future offer is less advantageous, being able to take advantage of Ionity Passport for an additional year will be very interesting.
