Why is there a dotted line between India and Pakistan? Understand in three minutes

When colonial India became independent in 1947, two countries were formed: on the one hand Pakistan, with a Muslim majority, and on the other, India, with a Hindu majority. Some regions then have the choice: to join one or other of these new states.

However, for Kashmir – then called the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir – the situation is more complicated. If the population is mainly Muslim, the monarch is Hindu.

Less than a year after the independence of the two countries, a war broke out: the first Indo-Pakistani war for control of Kashmir. This is the first of several conflicts that will leave hundreds of thousands dead and millions displaced.
