Why Sean Connery Turned Down Indiana Jones 4

In 2007, Sean Connery announced that he would not be reprising his role as Henry Jones Sr. in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” because he preferred to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. The real reason? Not really…

Sean Connery’s performance in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is unforgettable and many would have liked the actor to reprise his role as Henry Jones Sr. in the fourth installment of the saga, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But in 2007, the Brit showered the hopes of the fans.

“I thought about it for a long time, and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement, it was an Indiana Jones movie. I love working with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, and it goes without saying that it it’s an honor to have Harrison Ford as a son.”said Sean Connery in a press release.“But in the end, I still find that retirement is something much more fun!”

Sean Connery therefore did not play in Indiana Jones 4 because he wanted to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. So much for the official speech. Because in a later interview with The Hollywood Reporterthe actor revealed the real reason he said no to Indy!

Away from the sets since his bad experience on The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Sean Connery received a phone call from Steven Spielberg, who absolutely wanted him to play in the fourth installment of the cult saga.

“I spoke with Spielberg, but it didn’t work out”Sean Connery told The Hollywood Reporter. “The role that was written for me wasn’t big enough, it wasn’t worth coming back for. And then anyway, they took the story in another direction, where Indy’s dad n didn’t have such an important place. I suggested that they kill the character, it would have been more interesting.” A suggestion which, in the end, was accepted!

Goodbye Indiana Jones: Harrison Ford cries on stage and finds Demi-Lune 38 years later

Interviewed a few months later by MTVSean Connery gave his opinion on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an installment in the franchise that frankly divided the public and the critics. “If I saw the last Indy? Yes, I saw it. I thought it was pretty good”, declared the actor. Before adding that the film was also “a bit too long” to his taste.

To find Indiana Jones on the big screen, you will have to wait until June 28, when the fifth installment of the saga will be released in theaters, starring the famous adventurer archaeologist. A film that will mark the last appearance of Harrison Ford in this iconic role.
