Against all odds, the National Rally voted for the motion of censure tabled by the Nupes on Monday in the National Assembly. The motion garnered 239 votes out of the 289 needed to pass it. But Marine Le Pen’s objective was not to create an alliance with the left but to make a political coup.
It was the surprise of the day in the hemicycle. It all happened on Monday afternoon, a few hours before Marine Le Pen spoke at the podium. In a group meeting at the Palais-Bourbon, the deputies of the National Rally (RN) agreed to finally vote on the motion of censure of the new left alliance (Nupes), concerning the state budget for 2023, contrary to what the party cadres had so far claimed. “We had never completely closed the door”, tries to justify an RN parliamentarian.
A blow that makes it possible to “denounce the posture of the Republicans”
These motions responded to Article 49.3 of the Constitution, activated twice on Wednesday and Thursday by the Prime Minister. Surprise in the ranks of the majority, billiards with several bands for the presidential finalist… Because within the Nupes, many are those who would have done well without this support. By doing this, Marine Le Pen knows that she is causing trouble within a movement already shaken by the Quatennens and Bayou affairs. “Above all”, confides a marinist strategist, “this blow makes it possible to denounce the posture of the Republicans”.
It must be said that only 50 votes were missing for this motion of censure to succeed, while the Republicans have 62 deputies in the hemicycle. With this manoeuvre, the National Rally therefore sent a message to the government: its majority hangs by a thread, that of the Republicans.
