Will Honduras Adopt Bitcoin As Legal Tender?

Certainly, El Salvador’s adoption was a massive milestone, not only for Bitcoin maximalists, but for the entire crypto community. If you had predicted just a few years ago that a sovereign state would adopt Bitcoin as a legal means of payment in 2021, you would probably have been called crazy.

Well, times have changed. In the past few days, there have been increasing rumors that Honduras could follow. However, this is only speculation so far. digital news had reported that Honduran President Xiomara Castro had already spoken out in favor of bitcoin adoption. She is quoted as follows:

We must not allow El Salvador to be the only country to escape dollar hegemony. Honduras has the right to approach first world countries

There is no official confirmation of the statements yet. However, the well-known Bitcoin journalist Max Keizer published a Honduras flag with the caption “It’s happening…” on his Twitter account on March 18 (see below). The American has now achieved cult status in the Bitcoin community. Even if Keizer is not entirely uncontroversial, he was absolutely right with his forecasts in recent years. Keizer is also well networked in the region and advises, among other things, the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, on the launch of the so-called “Volcano Bonds”. Among other things, Bukele wants to use these to finance Bitcoin City in the country – BTC-ECHO reported. So it’s quite possible that he already has more information about a possible successor.

Is the stone rolling now?

So far, however, it is just rumors and speculation. However, a bitcoin adoption by Honduras could benefit tourism there. According to the responsible minister, tourism in El Salvador has increased by 30 percent since Bitcoin was legalized – we reported. In the Bitcoin community, however, one hopes that another candidate will finally get the ball rolling and that even larger industrialized nations will one day not be able to avoid declaring Bitcoin as an official means of payment.

Meanwhile, today, Tuesday, March 22, Malaysia also came into the spotlight on the crypto scene. A local newspaper reported that the Minister of Communications, Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin, wants to legalize several cryptocurrencies as legal means of payment. More about this here.
