"Will not back off": Canada returns the favor for US punitive tariffs

US President Trump announces tariffs on Canadian aluminum and the answer comes just a day later. Canada's vice-president Freeland says that one will "not escalate", but not back off either, and promises tariffs on US goods in the billions.

One day after US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on the import of Canadian aluminum, Canada announced new counter-tariffs. "We will not escalate and we will not back off," said Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland on Friday. Canada will act "decisively and strongly" in the defense of its aluminum industry and impose tariffs on US products worth around 3.6 billion Canadian dollars, Freeland said.

That corresponds to around 2.3 billion euros. A list of possible goods will be discussed in the next thirty days, it said. Trump's punitive tariffs are "unnecessary, unjustified and completely unacceptable," Freeland said. "Canadian aluminum is essential to the US industry, including the US military industry."

Trump announced his execution order on Thursday while visiting a washing machine factory in Ohio and complained that Canada was taking advantage of the United States. Already in 2018 there were tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada and Mexico in the USA, but these were lifted the following year. Opponents criticize that the tariffs would make products more expensive for US companies and consumers at home.
