The blue screen of death displayed to some users ultimately does not come from a Windows update gone wrong… but from a buggy microcode from Intel. This avenue had not really been considered at the start.
We reported to you at the end of August the appearance among certain users of a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) displayed at startup… along with the worrying mention “UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR”. Observed particularly among owners of Intel 13 processorse generation with an MSI motherboard, this anomaly was initially attributed to Microsoft and the deployment of update KB5029351 on Windows.
Microsoft then defended itself, and we learned this week that in this matter, the firm is actually not responsible for anything. The problem actually comes from a faulty microcode from Intel. Fortunately, a patch is already being deployed.
Intel admits it, the problem comes from there
“ Intel is aware of user reports of crashes with the error code “Unsupported processor” when updating to the August 2023 preview for Windows 10 and 11while using the latest BIOS updates from system manufacturers on the affected processors », Explains Intel in particular, without however specifying the deeper nature of the problem.
Perhaps more interesting for those affected, the company confirms that it has deployed two life-saving updates. “ Since September, Intel has released updated microcode versions 0x11D and 0x411C to system manufacturers to address this issue on Intel Core 13 processors.e generation (…)”, we read.
As stated for his part Neowin, MSI has already started rolling out a new BIOS equipped with these Intel microcode updates. On the other hand, other motherboard manufacturers are, for the moment, still in demand.
