When installing Windows 10 and Windows 11, you use the setup wizard to set up your Microsoft account details and automatically set your Windows user name. If you haven’t had a Microsoft account before, you will be asked to create one during installation.

When installing without a Microsoft account, as in previous versions of Windows, you have the option of selecting an individual user name. You can find out how to do this in the linked instructions.

What many people don’t know, however, is that you can change your user name on Windows at any time. However, the path is slightly different for a local Windows account than for an account that is directly linked to Microsoft. Below you can see both procedures.

Please note: In this guide we are using screenshots from Windows 10. However, the steps are the same in Windows 11 as only the window design has changed. The specified menus, key combinations and buttons are identical.

As the name in your Microsoft account changes, the sender name in your connected email account also changes. If this bothers you, you can set an alternative sending address with a different name, use a separate Microsoft account for Windows or only use Windows with a local Windows account.
