Windows 10: Bug causes screenshot tool to crash

Be careful if you use the Windows 10 built-in screenshot tool. The program may crash.

According to the IT news site Windowslatest, Microsoft has confirmed that the Windows 10 built-in screenshot tool “Snip & Sketch” can crash.

According to this, the tool (which you can easily start with the key combination Windows+Shift+S) crashes for some users if you want to use it to create screenshots. However, the screenshot problem only occurs in connection with “Snip & Sketch”, but not when, for example, you press the print button to take a screenshot of the entire screen. So affected users can still take screenshots on Windows 10 machines, only you should not use “Snip & Sketch”. Alternatively, the “Snipping Tool” can also be used.

In the support document for the update KB5012599 that was released on April 12, 2022 for Windows 10 Version 20H2, Window 10 Version 21H1, Windows 10 Version 21H2 and for Windows Server, Microsoft acknowledges the problems under the heading “Known issues in this update” at the bottom text a. However, this problem with the screenshot tool only occurs after the installation of update KB5010342 from February 8, 2022 and/or after the installation of later updates. According to Microsoft, it is investigating the problem and will provide an update as soon as more information becomes available. Microsoft has not yet announced when the patch will be released.

The “Snip & Sketch” was already causing problems in 2021, Microsoft then had to push a patch to get the stubborn Windows 10 app working properly again.
