Windows 11 2022: Microsoft confirms slowdowns when copying large files

Windows 11 seems to have performance issues when copying large files since the last update. Several solutions exist to circumvent the problem, but for the moment, Microsoft is not able to indicate when this one will be corrected.

It has now been two weeks since Microsoft began rolling out the annual major update for Windows 11, 22H2. As always, this update comes with its share of problems that can degrade the experience of some users.

A 40% drop in performance

” There is a performance regression with 22H2 when copying large files from a remote computer to a Windows 11 computer “admits Ned Pyle, executive at Microsoft, on the Tech Community platform.

The concern would affect file transfers weighing several gigabytes and would consist of a drop of around 40% in throughput with the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. But this drop in performance does not only concern SMB, local transfers are also affected by the phenomenon, adds Ned Pyle.

He also says that only systems that have installed the recent 2022 Windows 11 update are affected: other versions of Windows 11 as well as earlier operating systems are spared.

Microsoft has launched an investigation to identify the origin of the bug and resolve it, but the firm is not yet able to communicate a deployment date for a patch.

In the meantime, Ned Pyle offers some temporary solutions to work around the problem without having to revert to the previous version of Windows 11. He explains that it is possible to use a robocopy or xcopy command with the /J parameter to launch a copy substantial. Here is an example command: robocopy \someserversomeshare c:somefolder somefile.ned /J

The use of third-party software also makes it possible not to suffer from low speeds when copying large files. We can cite Fast Copy, TeraCopy or CopyMaestro as utilities that can troubleshoot.
