Windows 11: even for Android apps, Microsoft is demanding on the configuration side

Through the Amazon Appstore, it will be possible to install Android applications on Windows 11… at least if you have the right configuration. Because here too, Microsoft is watching over the grain.

With the first major update to Windows 11, Microsoft rolled out several important new features to its OS this week. Among them, the preview appearance of the Amazon Appstore. For the moment available only in the United States, it allows the installation of Android applications under Windows 11. As revealed in the video below, the applications are then launched in windowed mode, directly on the Microsoft OS, and more or less like any other program.

Only here, not all configurations are compatible with this function… and even if your PC is able to support Windows 11 (which is not necessarily won if it is “old”), it is possible that it does not may not support Android apps offered from the Amazon Appstore.

Ryzen 2000 processors not supported

Microsoft has indeed published the minimum and recommended configurations for this novelty. We discover, for example, that you need at least 8 GB of RAM to take advantage of it (16 GB is recommended) and that installation on an SSD (obviously either SATA III or NVMe) is required. On the processor side, you have to rely on an 8th generation Intel Core i3 or higher, an AMD Ryzen 3000 or higher, or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8c at least. Finally, Microsoft specifies that virtualization must be activated in order to allow support for Windows Subsystem on Android (WSA). The procedure is available at this address.

The most attentive will have noted that Microsoft knowingly omits second-generation AMD Ryzen processors (with the exception of the Ryzen 2000 APUs, which are more recent and therefore theoretically compatible). These are however supported by Windows 11. Unless there is a program change, if you have installed Windows 11 on a configuration equipped with one of these chips, you will not be able to take advantage of Android applications via the Amazon AppStore. At least when it is available in France.

Windows 11 review: the beginning of a new era for Windows

We tested Windows 11 for several months to form an opinion on it. Far from being perfect, Microsoft’s new operating system at least allows the publisher to start a new generation with peace of mind….
