The optional Moment 5 update is available to all users of Windows 11 and brings some improvements, in addition to adjustments due to the European Digital Markets Act.
It’s time to update your PC. Microsoft has just offered Moment 5, its latest update for Windows 11, for download, after several weeks of testing with users registered in the publisher’s beta program. This update is optional and does not include any security fixes.
On the other hand, the publisher takes advantage of this new version to make more or less important modifications, with improvements to already existing functionalities. Microsoft is also using Moment 5 to comply with Windows 11 with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the new European regulation applied to digital giants since the beginning of March 2024.
New lock screen widgets and more window layout options
Windows 11 Moment 5 first offers new widgets for the lock screen. In addition to the weather, it is now possible to display information relating to the traffic around you, sports results, or even financial data with the stock market prices of the stocks you follow. This feature will be rolled out more widely in the coming days, so it may not be available after installation.
Microsoft is also changing Snap Layout, a feature that allows you to readjust all windows on the screen with one click. Windows 11 will now analyze user behavior to automatically offer suitable templates for better window layout.
Also, proximity sharing is enriched with transfer speeds announced as faster as well as the possibility of renaming your PC to give it a personalized name that is easier to identify.
Voice access is finally enriched, with the addition of a French model and the ability to use it on several screens. Finally, the Photos app inherits a magic eraser to automatically delete elements on an image.
Microsoft offers more choices for users to comply with the DMA
Windows 11 also offers new DMA-related options, with the ability to remove pre-installed apps. After applying the update, users will be able to uninstall Microsoft Edge, Camera or Microsoft Photos software.
The Windows Web search pane will no longer only offer search results from Microsoft’s Bing engine. Users will be able to configure competing engines like Google. Same thing for the Microsoft Start news pane, which will be able to use links and articles contained in Google News.
Finally, Moment 5 allows users to not link their machine to a Microsoft account, if they wish not to synchronize their data between different devices.
