Windows 11 update: These are known problems and solutions

• Problems with HDR monitors: After the update to Windows 11 there are display errors on some HDR screens. As Microsoft confirmed, the problem occurs mainly when editing images with white areas that appear yellowish or different colors. According to the Windows manufacturer, this is caused by Win32 interfaces which, under certain conditions, report errors or unexpected information. Solution: Microsoft is working on a fix. This should be ready by the end of January 2022.
• Outlook search does not work: It had been known since summer 2021 that Outlook might cause problems on Windows 11. As Microsoft explains in a support document, in this case the Outlook search no longer delivers any results or causes the program to crash. This affects Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2019 and Outlook 2016 in conjunction with POP3 and IMAP mail accounts in which the messages are stored in PST / OST storage files. Solution: The cause of the problem is the search index that was deleted during the Windows 11 upgrade and that could not be rebuilt in time. To check this, click in the Outlook search field in the ribbon menu on Search tools and Indexing status. If the process stops, deactivate the Windows search in Outlook and use the Outlook search instead. Microsoft describes the necessary registry hack in a workaround.
• Printing via print server: In the summer and fall of 2021, Microsoft was hit by a series of breakdowns while printing. One of the problems related to printer connections through print servers, which are often found in office environments. Solution: Install update KB5007262.
• Kaspersky does not start: As Microsoft confirmed, the update KB5007215 distributed on the November patch day caused problems with the Microsoft Installer in Windows 11. It no longer updated or repaired certain apps so that they would not start. For example, Kaspersky Endpoint Security was affected. solution: Install update KB5007262.
• Bluescreens with Intel SST: Microsoft has confirmed compatibility problems between Windows 11 and an Intel audio driver that lead to error messages and blue screens when upgrading to Windows 11. The affected drivers are under the name “Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) Audio Controller” System devices in the Device manager to be found and have the internal name IntcAudioBus.sys. Versions 10.29.0.5152 and lower and 10.30.0.5152 and lower are affected. Solution: Until the problem was finally resolved, Microsoft imposed a Windows 11 update stop for affected devices. As a workaround, the manufacturer recommends updating the installed driver to version 10.29.00.5714 or 10.30.00.5714. After that, according to Microsoft, the problem no longer exists – and Windows 11 can be installed.
• Snipping Tool and other inbox apps don’t start: Due to an outdated Microsoft certificate, some inbox apps such as the Snipping Tool, the on-screen keyboard, the voice typing, the emoji picker, the input method editor as well as the apps “First Steps” and Tips no longer start. Solution: There is a patch that is supposed to fix the problem.
• Incompatibility with Virtual Box: Microsoft confirmed problems with Oracle Virtual Box and therefore imposed a temporary update lock (compatibility hold) for affected devices. The cause was an incompatibility with Windows Hypervisor and Hyper-V. Solution: Oracle has now fixed the problem. Install Virtual Box 6.1.28.
• Printer setup via HTTP: There were also problems setting up network printers over HTTP connections. Solution: Install the optional update KB5006746.
• Printer setup via IPP: The setup of network printers via the Internet Printing Protocol was also disrupted. Solution: Install the optional update KB5006746.
• Printing with standard settings: In certain cases the print settings were incorrectly transmitted to the print server so that the printouts were made with default values. Solution: Install the optional update KB5006746.
• Administrator rights for printing: Some users had to enter administrator credentials every time they print. Solution: Install the optional update KB5006746.
• Côc-Côc browser: The Vietnamese freeware browser did not start on Windows 11 or caused other problems. The group therefore imposed a temporary update lock (compatibility hold) on affected devices until the problem was resolved. Solution: Install the optional update KB5006746.
• Registry values ​​with special characters: In the course of the investigations into Côc Côc it turned out that special characters (non-ASCII characters) were responsible in the registry values ​​of the program. According to Microsoft, the problem also affected other apps. Solution: Install the optional update KB5006746.
• AMD processors: Devices with AMD’s Ryzen processors suffered performance losses after updating to Windows 11. In the worst case, their performance collapsed by up to 15 percent under the new operating system. Solution: Install the patch and driver provided by Microsoft or AMD.
• Problems with Intel’s network software killers and VPNs: If you use Intel’s network software Killer, you have to accept a loss of speed under Windows 11. Compatibility problems caused UDP packets to be lost. This led to delays in transmissions over this protocol. The same may have happened with VPN programs based on the UDP protocol. Solution: Microsoft has fixed the error on the October patchday on October 12, 2021 with the KB5006674 update.
• High system load: Some users report high memory utilization and the resulting loss of performance. Windows Explorer is to blame. Solution: Install the optional update KB5006746.

In addition to the official problem reports from Microsoft, third-party manufacturers repeatedly provide information on possible bugs in connection with Windows 11. These do not lead to an update lock, but affected users should wait until the problems have been resolved before switching to Windows 11:

• SSD performance problems: Winfuture reported on slow SSD drives that use the NVMe protocol in early December 2021. Owners of these actually particularly fast drives complained of sometimes extreme performance losses under Windows 11. Microsoft has now confirmed the problem and speaks of a bug that limits the performance of all drives (NVMe, SSD, hard disk) under Windows 11. The cause are unnecessary actions during write accesses, caused by the mandatory NTFS USN journal on the system drive C :. Solution: In the event of a slowdown in performance, install the optional update KB5007262. Otherwise wait for the automatic update on the next Windows patch day.
• Conexant audio driver: As with Windows 10, there are problems with audio drivers from Conexant that prevent the upgrade to Windows 11. Solution: There is a workaround.
• USB printer: The printer manufacturer Brother warns of problems with Windows 11 in a support document. According to this, 92 laser and inkjet printers refuse to work if they are connected to the computer via USB. Or they are simply not recognized.
