If you were hoping to hear no more ads within Windows 11 until at least next year, well, you’ve missed it.

While dark mode arrives in the action bar of Windows 11, advertisements, meanwhile, invite themselves into the Start menu.

Windows 11: a window open to advertising?

Remember, it all started last March, when a Twitter user discovered that Office 365 advertising had popped up in Windows 11 File Explorer (Windows Insiders only). If this first discovery was far from having reassured the users of the operating system, the firm directed by Satya Nadella had nevertheless specified to us that this was not intended to be made public and that it was not was just a simple test.

Nevertheless, at the beginning of November, what was only a “test” will finally happen again. Microsoft has indeed repeated the operation by integrating, this time, advertising for OneDrive directly in the Start menu, and more specifically in the disconnection settings. Would the future of Windows 11 be placed under the sign of excessive pubs?

The Windows 11 Start menu opens (too) to ads

When Windows 11 build 25247 was released (Dev Channel), insider members noticed the arrival of a new “section” on the Start menu. Called “common websites,” this suggests sites based on trends in your area or searches in your browsing history. If, until now, the services put forward only concerned those of Microsoft, it would now be a question of also promoting third-party services, as our colleagues from Ghacks in their columns.

Fortunately, it looks like the feature can (for now) be disabled from the Start menu customization settings. That said, it is clear that given the many attempts of the Redmond firm to try to integrate advertising into its operating system, there is a good chance that they will eventually materialize. in one way or another.

Either way, let’s hope that Windows 11 Start Menu, which has lost many of its features compared to Windows 10, isn’t doomed to act as a billboard for different services. We also hope that this obvious desire to make it a promotional tool will not be to the detriment of its primary usefulness, namely to carry out research and launch programs with ease. Unfortunately, nothing is less certain…
