Background updates succeed under certain conditions
The Redmond company explains that the problem will very often come from the power and internet connection time that a machine needs to successfully process the transparent installation of an operating system update.
We learn that a device requires at least two consecutive hours of access to Windows Update (and therefore the Internet) and six hours of connection in total for the update to be installed reliably.
This time allows the system to prepare for file download and installation in the background and to ensure that the process restarts where it left off when a computer comes back online after a period of inactivity.
Internet connection and power are key
Microsoft therefore advises users who want to benefit more quickly from the latest updates to leave their PC connected longer. The company also alerts on the system’s power options, an entry into standby can prevent it from carrying out the necessary operations.
For professionals who manage a computer fleet, the use of the Microsoft Intune service makes it possible to analyze and understand why an update could not be completed on a machine. If applicable, an alert message indicating a ” insufficient connectivity for update appears.
