First series from the new Marvel Searchlight label, prohibited for those under 16 years of age, moreover, Echo has the mission of relaunching the Marvel Cinematic Universe machine. So, goal achieved? Yes and no.
Available since January 10, 2024 in the form of five episodes of approximately 40 minutes, Echo is therefore the first Marvel series of the year. This also launches the Marvel Searchlight label, where more down-to-earth, modest and realistic works and characters will be offered, without necessarily aiming to advance the great MCU. To be able to enjoy it on Disney+, you will need to have a 16+ profile, the show promises to be violent and mature.
A series that is too short and tries to get off the beaten track
If there is a little blood and a few fights reminiscent of the best hours of Daredevil and of Banshee, Echo still remains quite wise. It must be said that with its very (too) compact format, the series does not have the time to really do anything constructive.
Set a few months after the series Hawkeyewhere Maya Lopez was introduced (more info in our guide to enjoying the MCU in the best order), Echo explores as best it can the complicated relationship between the character played by Alaqua Cox and the Kingpin (still played by Vincent D’Onofrio). While doing this, she also attempts to set up a family drama, show a bit of Native American culture, and use the fact that our heroine is deaf. A laudable desire to show something else, a bit like what was done in particular Miss Marvel.
Due to a lack of time and truly captivating dialogue, the whole thing unfortunately has no depth and doesn’t tell much of anything interesting. Both the content and the form are sadly forgettable and we hoped for more for this “renewal”. For the launch of a new label, Echo turns out to be far too bland and gives the feeling of having skimmed over most of its subjects. We will remember some impactful clashes and the desire to see Daredevil and the Kingpin again in the future series Daredevil: Born Againbut unfortunately that’s all.

It was highly anticipated and did not disappoint. Disney+ is not a rival to Netflix, but a complementary offering, aimed particularly at children (young and old) and more broadly towards the family. The Star universe, for its part, is starting to bear fruit by offering more and more original or exclusive series. It’s a shame, however, that the service continues to lose features and gain constraints.
