Most people know Scott Bakula from “NCIS: New Orleans”, where he was able to hunt criminals in seven seasons. In 2021 the “NCIS” offshoot ended, but the actor is no stranger either: in the early 2000s he became famous as Captain Jonathan Archer from “Star Trek: Enterprise”. And already in the 90s he had an international hit: “Back to the Past”. The series, originally called Quantum Leap, was critically acclaimed but never really caught on with audiences and was canceled in 1993 due to poor ratings. Now he’s returning to NBC with a new series, making the “back to the past” revival more and more likely.
Scott Bakula back at NBC
The new series is called “Unbroken”. Bakula will take the leading role here. The project is about a ranch in California that has been run by a family for generations. The owners are no strangers to the national rodeo championships. Bakula’s character, Ash Holleren, is a multiple champion, but the modern world is taking its toll on him and he’s not making any money. In addition, the neighbors are peering at his property. In order to regain the prosperity of the past, Holleren has to break new ground. Supporting young women in rodeo sport could also be a solution.
“Unbroken” was ordered by NBC, the network that also aired “Back to the Past.” Bakula’s return could therefore speed up the production of the sci-fi series as well. Only in January did it become known that a new edition was being worked on. Bakula is said to be involved, but it wasn’t immediately clear whether it was in front of or behind the camera.
The ending of “Back to the Past” was never resolved, leaving the series with one of the most frustrating endings in TV history to date. But that could change soon. In any case, Bakula is already in the starting blocks.
