“With or without underwear”: James Gunn teases the Superman Legacy costume

David Corenswet, the new Superman from DC Studios, will he have underwear over his tights? This is the essential question that a user asked James Gunn on Threadsasking the director and new CEO of DC Studios not to incorporate the famous briefs into the Man of Steel’s outfit.

The red briefs worn outside the costume were a key element of Superman’s early character design, but were not part of Henry Cavill’s outfit (unlike those of Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh). What will happen to David Corenswet?

James Gunn remains vague on this subject and explains: “You can’t imagine the number of pleas and annoyances I get about the underwear. To me, that’s not the most important aspect of Superman or his story. But there are so many strong feelings about it! This may be an extreme view.

The costume has changed in many ways over the years. These are all (or almost all) valid versions of Superman, with or without briefs on the outside, with or without yellow S on the cape, with or without black around the S, with or without a mullet cut, and so on.“.

The design of Superman’s costume is a real topic among fans of the superhero, but the filmmaker has obviously not yet decided what outfit his iteration of the hero created in 1933 by screenwriter Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster will wear. We will therefore have to wait before knowing whether or not David Corenswet will wear red briefs over his tights.

Scheduled in theaters on July 9, 2025, Superman: Legacy will be the first feature film in the new DC shared universe. David Corenswet will be joined by Rachel Brosnahan in the role of Loïs Lane, Nicholas Hoult in that of Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion will play Green Lantern, Isabela Merced will play Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi will play the role of Mister Terrific while Anthony Carrigan will lend his features to Metamorpho .
