It was a desperate act of love. Both the prosecution and the defense agree on this. After eight years of caring for his wife with dementia at home, a 90-year-old was at the end of his strength last summer. At this point, the 88-year-old could no longer walk or speak. But the husband was denied the support of 24-hour care. There was no room in the house for that, they said. In the old people’s home, the case didn’t seem acute enough – there was a waiting list. “That was the death sentence,” explains the 90-year-old. Defendant sentenced After his wife was “denied a decent life,” the pensioner came up with the idea of taking sleeping pills. He dissolved 15 pieces in a glass of water and gave them to the 88-year-old. The Waldviertler justifies himself that his wife had been looking for a way to die for years. He wanted to accompany her. But the dose wasn’t lethal. He has now been sentenced to five years’ conditional imprisonment for attempted murder – not final. His biggest wish is to see his wife again. She now lives in the nursing home.
