Artur Jorge, the former coach of the Swiss national football team, has died at the age of 78. The Portuguese’s relatives said he “fell asleep peacefully surrounded by his loved ones after a long illness.”
Jorge, who celebrated great victories as a player with Benfica Lisbon, was one of the greatest and most successful coaches in Europe in the 80s and 90s. With FC Porto he won the Portuguese championship four times and the championship cup in 1987 after a memorable final win against Bayern Munich (2-1). He also led PSG to the French title in 1994.
Unfortunate chapter with Switzerland
Due to his great success at club level, the SFV hired Jorge as national team coach in 1996 as the successor to the popular and successful Roy Hodgson. It wasn’t supposed to be a happy chapter for Jorge and the SFV.
Jorge attracted the displeasure of the press and the public in the run-up to the European Championship finals in England when he did not call up the deserving veterans Alain Sutter and Adrian Knup for the tournament. After three months full of misunderstandings and a preliminary round exit at the EURO, the intermezzo was already over.
