From November 20, TF1 will broadcast 28 matches of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar unencrypted. But the conflict between it and Canal+, which has not been broadcasting the TF1 group’s channels for two months, could have consequences for audiences and advertising. Even if the sports director of TF1 affirms that the channel is not worried.

While the World Cup in Qatar will begin on November 20, the conflict between TF1, which will broadcast 28 matches unencrypted, and Canal+, is still not settled. For nearly two months, Canal+ has no longer broadcast the channels of the TF1 group, because the two parties have been unable to reach a financial agreement on the renewal of their contract. Since then, the two groups blame each other.

Will advertisers be there?

A decision that has consequences for the audiences of the TF1 group and above all raises the question of advertising, a major issue when broadcasting matches. A legitimate question arises: will advertisers be there as much if the audience is expected to be smaller than expected?

In an interview with the newspaper The Team, TF1 sports director Julien Millereux returned to the subject. And according to him, the chain is not worried: “We are ahead of the filling compared to 2018”, he specifies. He still says he hopes “that the conflict with Canal + will be over by the World Cup”. On October 20, the Paris Court of Appeal confirmed that Canal+ was not obliged to restore the broadcasting of the TF1 group’s channels on its DTT satellite offer, confirming a decision handed down at first instance on September 22 by the court of commerce in Paris.
