The new generation of NVIDIA graphics cards will be more powerful and will benefit from the revival of the super-sampling technique.
The super-sampling technique assisted by NVIDIA’s artificial intelligence (DLSS) is not new: the first version dates from 2019. On the other hand, alongside the release of the new GeForce RTX 4000s, NVIDIA announces the arrival of DLSS 3.
Anticipate frames rather than calculate them
In the weeks to come, NVIDIA will no doubt have the opportunity to detail things in more detail and to come back to all the advances in DLSS 3. During his keynote for the GTC 2022, Jensen Huang nevertheless mentioned certain points.
First, he insisted on a new way of working in addition to what DLSS 2 already offered. With DLSS 3, NVIDIA prides itself on not only calculating incoming frames, but also anticipating them, imagining them before the GPU has calculated them.
For this, DLSS 3 relies in particular on the optical flow accelerator which studies the previous frames and the current frame to anticipate the movements on the next one.
Ray tracing performance “explodes”
Of course, DLSS 3 will be more particularly used on all that is the most demanding in terms of calculation time. NVIDIA logically thinks of ray tracing, which we know can bring even the most powerful of configurations to its knees.
While the new GeForce RTX 4000s will have much more computing power than the RTX 3000s, NVIDIA is betting even more on DLSS 3 to increase the potential of its solutions. The graph above shows it very clearly: ray tracing power is progressing much faster than the number of GPU transistors.
NVIDIA has logically focused on games that will exploit these new techniques. Either it’s about Cyberpunk 2077 or of flight simulator, the demonstrations, although much too short for our taste, were eloquent. Beyond these demos, NVIDIA clarified that ” more than 35 games will be DLSS 3 compatible at launch in early October.
Among these games, we were able to discover a nice surprise: an RTX version of Portal (Portal RTX quite simply) which was carried out thanks to the NVIDIA RTX Remix tool, which allows, like a mod, to boost any game, no matter how old, with ray tracing sauce.
In addition to Portal RTXNVIDIA also demonstrated its tool with The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind before giving the full list of games and tools that support DLSS 3:
